At Miami Valley Homecare, we offer home care services in Dayton and other locations in the surrounding area. Whether you're interested in receiving assistance at your home for some activities or on a 24/7 basis, it's normal to have questions. Although we have an FAQ section, we thought it might be helpful for you to learn more about the benefits of home care services for you and your relatives.

How do I know what type of care I need?

When you first start exploring the idea of receiving care at home, you may not know how much assistance you need from the start. It's common not to know until you undergo a thorough assessment. It's also not unusual for your care needs to change over time.

At Miami Valley Homecare, we perform a thorough assessment and then make our recommendations for a care package. If your requirements change to need more or less care, we can adjust services accordingly.

How does staying in my home benefit me?

When it comes to receiving help as you age, you face a series of choices. Although there are lots of options available, they usually involve either staying in a residential care facility, moving in with a family member, or staying in your own home. We believe that staying in your own home comes with lots of benefits. The biggest benefit of them all is maintaining your independence.

Remaining independent as you get older is important for several reasons:

  • Your independence could help you maintain your memory for longer. When you continue doing a lot for yourself, you can prevent memory loss.
  • We've also observed that many of those who remain independent reduce their risk of conditions such as depression.
  • You may feel more confident by remaining in your own home. When you're familiar with your environment and your routine, it's comforting.
  • Some people find that remaining in their own home gives them a more definite purpose in life. Additionally, they find it easier to maintain their usual social links.

Will a full-time caregiver do everything for me?

If you choose to use a full-time caregiver rather than one who visits daily or periodically, you may wonder whether they'll be doing everything for you. This isn't always the case. We provide caring staff who offer continuous assistance, but they'll gauge how much help you need with various tasks.

We often find that a lot of our clients and their families get peace of mind from knowing that someone else is always around. This is particularly advantageous if you have a condition that fluctuates, such as multiple sclerosis. You can receive more assistance on days when you need it, but maintain more independence when you feel able to.

Can I do anything to make my home easier to live in?

In addition to using one of our caregivers, you may want to take steps toward making your home easier to live in. For example, if you're currently struggling to lift yourself in and out of the bath, consider replacing it with a shower with a bench. Similarly, if you're worried about falling and hurting yourself in the shower, consider using anti-slip mats and grab bars.

Making small modifications to your home can help you maintain your confidence, and it can keep you safe. If you're looking to make any major modifications, consider asking your usual physician about having a professional assessment first.

We hope we've answered some of the questions we regularly receive at Miami Valley Homecare about using a live-in caregiver. If you'd like a personalized answer to your questions or would like to schedule an assessment, call 937-671-2273.
