Comparing live-in care vs part-time caregiver

When you’re trying to find the best care for an aging parent, it can be difficult to know what’s best. There are so many options that you want to make sure you choose what’s right for their individual needs. At Miami Valley Homecare, we can help you make the best decision for them by outlining the unique aspects of live-in care and a part-time caregiver.

Hours of care each day

The number of hours your parent receives care each day will vary depending on the type of care they receive. A live-in caregiver is going to move into the home and be there with your parent around the clock. This means they’ll be available to help them get ready when they wake up in the morning, provide meals, clean the house, then assist them with getting ready for and going to bed at night. At this time, the caregiver will go to bed as well. This is often best for somebody who has significant needs throughout the day to ensure health and safety.

In contrast, a part-time caregiver will arrive at the home each morning and provide non-medical care throughout the day. Care during the day will often be similar to that of a live-in caregiver but might not extend into the evening. It’s not uncommon for a part-time caregiver to work part-time hours and spend fewer than 31 hours a week with your parent.

Developed relationships

It’s not uncommon for patients to develop different relationships with live-in and part-time caregivers. A live-in caregiver will often feel like a member of the family as they’re always at your parent’s home. They might even accompany your parent on vacations if they’re able to go so you can ensure the same level of care is available at home. This bond is often uniquely strong, which can benefit your parent with more individualized care.

The amount of time a part-time caregiver spends with a patient is still going to be significant enough that they can develop a solid relationship with your parent. However, it’s not unusual for caregivers to rotate through as part-time workers often have more turnover than long-term, live-in providers. This can be a difficult process for seniors as they have to get used to new caregivers.

Cost

When considering the type of care that’s best for your parent, you’re going to want to look into the costs associated with both live-in care and a part-time caregiver. Keep in mind that Medicare won’t pay for long-term care with either caregiver, so you’ll need to consider how much money they have readily available for care.

As you try to make a decision about which is best for your parent’s budget, consider that live-in care can often vary based on an agreement that you reach. You could be paying between $1,000 and $5,000 a month depending on your living arrangement. Although, you can also consider trading care for room and board. This is often an agreement between a contracted caregiver and the family. With part-time caregivers, you’re going to be paying an hourly rate based on what an agency dictates.
